Travel Vaccines

We no longer stock the majority of travel vaccines. If you are planning a journey outside of northern Europe, we suggest you follow the steps below:

Log on to the following NHS travel advice site:

                  http://www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk/

Find the country or countries you will be visiting and look at "immunisations"

If your holiday is less than four weeks and is in "tourist" areas, then you only need to consider "Courses or Boosters advised"

If your holiday is long stay, you are working in the community or you are "backpacking", you should consider "Vaccines sometimes advised" also.

Specific vaccines

Tetanus If you have had childhood schedule of immunisations in the UK and at least one booster dose as a teenager or adult, you will have adequate protection for normal travel risk. Only if you are undertaking significant risky work(likely to lead to trauma) in the foreign country will you need additional protection

Polio & Diphtheria If you have had childhood schedule of immunisations in the UK and at least one booster dose as a teenager or adult, you will have adequate protection for normal travel risk. Only if you are undertaking significant risky work involving frequent close contact with the local population in the foreign country will you need additional protection

Hepatitis A Two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine since 1995 separated in time by no more than two years will probably have given life cover. If you have not had such vaccines, then you should ask for a prescription for this vaccine

Typhoid Typhoid vaccine lasts for three years. If you have not had a typhoid vaccine within the three years prior to the last date of your holiday, you will need a dose of this vaccine

Hepatitis B Is spread by blood and other intimate body fluids. If you are working in the community in at risk countries (Eastern Europe. Russia, Asia or South America or Africa, you should ask for a course of vaccine (three doses)

Rabies rabies vaccine gives you time to get to a hospital if you are travelling away from civilisation in affected countries. If you are likely to be more than 2 days rapid travel from a hospital and undertaking risky travel (backpacking etc) in affected countries you should request a course of vaccine. A full course of vaccine (3 doses) will give at least 2-3 years cover

Japanese B Encephalitis This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes in endemic countries (far east mainly). Vaccine – two or three doses- is recommended if you are travelling to those regions away from cities.

Cholera This vaccine is administered orally - two doses separated by three to six weeks. This gives protection against some cholera strains and also against some E Coli strains… again recommended if backpacking to Africa, South America and India

Meningitis ACWY

This is required for those on the HAJJ pilgrimage or those working for long periods with local communities in areas where it is prevalent – see advice on the website

Malaria The risk should be assessed by looking at the Malaria Section and the Malaria Map on this website. You will need to ask for a prescription if you need anything other than Proguanil or Chloroquine. We will need to know the length of stay in the malaria zone in order to calculate your requirements.

Yellow Fever Yellow fever vaccine may be required for entry to certain countries – this is only available from a Yellow Fever Vaccination centre – see below

Please complete the vaccine order form by clicking here for your vaccines/malaria medications and leave it at our Reception desk. You will be able to collect the prescription for your vaccines the next day. When you receive the vaccines from your pharmacist they should be kept between 2 and 8 degrees Centigrade (the larder part of your fridge) until you come for your appointment. Please make an appointment with YOUR doctor or one of the practice nurses for their administration.

You should allow at least 6 weeks before travel to ensure we can offer a full protective course of vaccination. You may be charged a prescription fee by the pharmacist for vaccines issued on the NHS. You will be required to pay the full cost of the vaccines for those issued privately and for Malaria medications- ask your pharmacist for details. We do not currently charge for administering the vaccines but may charge if certification is required(eg Meningitis ACWY certificate)
